Road-Tripping Fun: Engaging Games to Play with Your Family

Hitting the road with your family? Keep boredom at bay with these entertaining road trip games that turn travel time into family fun time.

1. License Plate Game

This classic road trip game involves spotting license plates from different states or provinces. Each player keeps a lookout for vehicles from as many states or provinces as possible. You can even turn this into a friendly competition, with the person who spots the most winning a small prize.

2. I Spy

“I Spy” is a simple yet entertaining game that kids (and adults) love. A player chooses an object in their sight and gives a clue about it, such as “I spy with my little eye, something blue.” The rest of the family tries to guess what the object is.

3. 20 Questions

Another family favorite, “20 Questions,” starts with one player thinking of a person, place, or thing. The rest of the family can ask up to 20 yes/no questions to figure out what the player is thinking of.

4. Alphabet Game

In this game, players try to spot all the letters of the alphabet, in order, on road signs, license plates, or nearby buildings. The first person to reach ‘Z’ wins!

5. Car Bingo

Before you leave, print out or purchase some car bingo cards featuring images of things you might see on a road trip like a red barn, a bridge, a motorcycle, etc. Each player gets a card and marks off items as they see them. The first person to mark a complete row or column wins.

6. Storytelling Game

One person starts a story with a sentence or two. Then the next person adds on, and so forth. The story can take all kinds of fun and unexpected turns as each person adds their part.

7. Name That Tune

This game involves playing the beginning of a song and seeing who can name the tune first. This can be a fun game for families with older children or teens who enjoy music.

8. Would You Rather?

“Would you rather” questions can range from silly to serious and can spark some fun and interesting discussions. For example, “Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?”

Traveling together provides an excellent opportunity to bond as a family. These games not only make the journey more enjoyable but also help to create lasting memories. So buckle up and let the road trip fun begin!
