What is a Bauble and How is it Different from Other Types of Christmas Ornament?

If you look up the definition of bauble, it will state that it’s a ‘small, showy trinket or decoration’. So, does this pertain to every type of Christmas ornament? Or only certain types of ornaments? This article will discuss baubles, so you understand what sets them apart.

  • Baubles are typically inexpensive Christmas ornaments but there are more expensive varieties.
  • Baubles generally have a spherical shape. They are often plain or frosted but they can feature any design.
  • Baubles were first invented in Lauscha, Germany by Hans Greiner in the late 1840’s.
  • Baubles were inspired by fruits and nuts but were eventually updated to be given a spherical shape.
  • Queen Victoria brought baubles from Germany to the rest of Europe in the late 19th century.
  • F.W. Woolworth became the main importer of baubles in the USA in 1880.
  • Germany was the top producer of baubles before World War I. By the end of WW II, the U.S. moved into the top spot.
  • The first baubles created were hand-crafted and made of glass. They came with a high price tag and were only available for the rich.  
  • Today, most baubles are made of plastic which makes them cheaper to manufacture and more affordable to everyone. However, glass baubles are available as well.
  • The Czech Republic still makes baubles with quality glass, so they are quite expensive to manufacture and purchase.
  • The first baubles were said to be inspired by the idea of blown eggshells.

What are the Types of Baubles?

Today’s baubles are available in a variety of designs and colors. They can feature Christmas characters, or striped themes. They can say things like ‘Merry Christmas”, or they can have writing that represents a special date such as an anniversary or birthday.

While most baubles are round, they can also feature oval shapes. This gives them an unusual look and provides them with a certain elegance. They will look fantastic hanging on any tree.
