Hello travel enthusiasts! This is Rachel, your friendly globe-trotter, and today I’d love to share with you some of my favorite airport features and amenities that have made my travels easier, comfortable, and even delightful. No one really looks forward to long hours at the airport, but these features and amenities certainly make a huge difference.
1. Lounge Access
I’ll start off with the epitome of airport luxury – airport lounges. Whether you gain access through your ticket type, airline membership status, or credit card benefits, airport lounges offer a serene environment to escape the hustle and bustle of crowded terminals. Enjoy comfy seating, free WiFi, a spread of food and beverages, and sometimes even spa services. My personal favorite is the Turkish Airlines lounge in Istanbul with its library, cinema, and a suite of shower rooms.
2. Sleep Pods
Long layovers can be grueling, but airports like the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport are making it easier with Minute Suites. These private suites offer daybeds for napping, workstations, and even showers in some locations. Other airports like Abu Dhabi International offer sleep pods where weary travelers can catch a quick nap.
3. Airport Art and Exhibitions
Many airports have turned their vast spaces into galleries, boasting stunning art installations and exhibitions. I particularly love the kinetic rain sculpture at Singapore’s Changi Airport and the colorful ‘Greetings from Nashville’ mural at Nashville International. It adds a touch of culture and color to the travel experience and makes for great photo opportunities!
4. Wellness and Spa Services
Airports are stepping up their game with wellness centers and spa services. XpresSpa, found in many U.S. airports, offers quick massages, facials, and mani-pedis. Meanwhile, the Be Relax Spa at airports like San Diego and Baltimore provide full body massages and aromatherapy to soothe any pre-flight anxiety.
5. Outdoor Spaces
Outdoor spaces in airports, like the TWA Hotel’s rooftop pool at JFK or the outdoor terrace in Zurich Airport’s lounge, are absolute treats. Nothing beats fresh air and natural light when you’ve been cooped up in a plane or waiting for your next flight.
6. Airport Libraries
For book lovers like me, finding an airport with a library is like finding an oasis in a desert. The library at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is a cozy haven filled with books, comfy seating, and a calm ambiance. It’s the perfect place to unwind and get lost in a good book before your flight.
7. Kid-Friendly Amenities
Traveling with children can be stressful, but airports are now offering amenities to keep little ones entertained. Play areas, nursing rooms, and family-friendly lounges, like the one in Hong Kong International Airport with its interactive play installations, can be a lifesaver.
8. Food Markets and Quality Dining
Gone are the days of settling for fast food at airports. From the food market at Copenhagen Airport to fine dining at One Flew South in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, airports now offer a variety of delicious food options that cater to all tastes.
9. Efficient Security Procedures
Lastly, any feature that speeds up the security process gets a thumbs up from me. From CLEAR biometric screening in U.S. airports to e-gates in places like Dubai International Airport, these technologies are real time-savers.
Remember, airports are more than just a stopover spot, they’re a part of the journey. Next time you fly, take a moment to explore the airport and enjoy its offerings – you might just find your new favorite feature or amenity!
Signing off, Rachel.
